- BY K.G. KARUNARATNE

The skeletal remains of a lady teacher had been recovered from a shrub jungle on the banks of Moragahakanda Reservoir on Saturday night (17), the Polonnaruwa Police said.

The woman’s husband had lodged a complaint that she had gone missing from home since June 21.

However, on Saturday morning (17) the Police suspected foul play and arrested the husband and questioned to find out if he were responsible for the death of his wife.

The Police said that under interrogation he had confessed that he had assaulted his wife during an altercation and when she died, he carried the body by car and dumped it in the jungle near the reservoir.

The Police on Saturday night recovered the body from the location.

The victim, Manori Hasanthika Thotagamuwa (36) mother of one child, was a resident of Nissankamalla Pura. She was a teacher at Polonnaruwa Royal College.

A Senior Police Officer said the body was decomposed and only the skeletal remains were found.

Naula Magistrate Lusaka Kumari Dharmakirthi, who visited the scene and held the preliminary inquiry, ordered the Police to refer the skeletal remains and the victim’s clothes to the JMO, Matale General Hospital for postmortem examination.

The suspect, Jayasekara Mudiyanselage Mahinda Kumara, was produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate and was remanded till August 28.

A Police team under HQI Polonnaruwa Police CI. M.S.M. Jarool, and OIC Crimes Investigation Branch IP A. Chandrasekara is conducting further investigations on the instructions of SP Tissa Lal De Silva, and SSP Dhammika Weerasekara.
