No government jobs now says Finance and Media Minister

- BY KRISHAN JEEWAKA JAYARUK AND RASUN DAHANAYAKA

Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said on Saturday at Matara that there are no government jobs and the jobs we give are a certain type of sin because the government institutions are overloaded with its employees, that the government cannot bear the burden. He said that three thousand employees are in one place where salaries for thousand employees can be paid and that he had become a partner of that sin in the bygone era.

He said so at a ceremony held for opening offices of the government banks which issue loans in the Matara town under Enterprise Sri Lanka programme.

He added,“those who pass grade eight or ten are not qualified for obtaining jobs in the government in future.those who pass G.C.E. (O/L) have to commit suicide if they expect government jobs.there are no government jobs now. When we become MPS, we are going to fill vacancies in every institution. Then, even the profitable institutions also begin to run at a loss.that is the reason why every government institution has become unprofitable.”

He said further that there are many jobs in the private sector which pay high salaries. He said that he would not tell the youths to go to Middle East for employment and that well-paid jobs are available in Sri Lanka, they are manual jobs. According to him, the Sri Lankans are shy to do labour jobs and that we have to import labourers to do our menial work. However, the labourers in our building sites are paid wages more than the Saudi employers.

He said that the companies request him to import labourers from the countries like China, India and Myanmar and if such a situation will arise, do not protest that the foreigners are employed here.there is no unemployment problem here.the unemployment has reduced by 12% in Sri Lanka according to the Central Bank reports.
