DMC: Weather may improve in coming days

Windy and showery conditions which prevailed in the country during the past few days were expected to weaken over the island during the coming days, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday citing the Meteorolog­y Department.

The DMC quoting the Meteorolog­y Department forecasts said showers exceeding 50 mm could be expected at some places, particular­ly in the Central and the Sabaragamu­wa Provinces. “Several spells of showers will occur in the Western Province

and in the Galle, Matara and the Kurunegala Districts,” it said. “Strong gusty winds up to 50-60 km/h can be expected over the island particular­ly in Central, Northweste­rn, North-central, Southern, Sabaragamu­wa and Western provinces and in the Badulla, Trincomale­e and Batticaloa Districts,” it said.

“Wind speed in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota and the sea area extending from Trincomale­e to Batticaloa is expected to be around 50-60 km/h. “These sea areas will be rough and can be very rough at times as the wind speeds can increase up to 70-80 km/h. “Wind speeds in the other sea areas will be 35-45 km/h. These sea areas will be fairly rough and can be very rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50-60 km/h,” it said.
