Awareness campaign on a society sans bribery and corruption

To mark World’s Children’s Day on October 1, the Bribery Commission is organising a major awareness campaign targeting students from more than 100 schools in the Southern Province in a bid to nurture a generation free from bribery and corruption.

The BC will select 500 students from the 100 schools for the campaign to be held on World Children’s Day.

Bribery Commissioner Neville Guruge told the Daily Mirror that the Southern Province was specially selected for this programme because the response from the province with regard to the prevention of bribery and corruption was comparatively high when compared with the other provinces.

He said teenage O/L and A/L students with an acceptable level of maturity would be selected for the awareness campaign under the theme “Children of today, Our Keepers tomorrow”.

Mr. Guruge said the main objective is to educate young students on the threshold of society after completing their exams, to cultivate better social values that would help them to lead a life devoid bribery or corruption.

“We are selecting teenage students for these programmes because their maturity level will help them to better understand the importance of such a society by learning the value of honesty,” he said.

The programme will be held under the patronage of the Southern Province Education Minister Chandima Rasaputhra and with the participation of officials including school principals and teachers.

Mr. Guruge said the setting up of ‘Integrity Clubs’ in every school would also be highlighted in this campaign and so far 33 schools countrywide have set up such clubs.

“By creating Integrity Clubs we expect the students to educate each other and engage in activity on how to create a society free of bribery and corruption at school level. It was a Southern Province school that first provided a positive response to the setting up of a Integrity Clubs,” he said.
