CHINA DOMINATES ITF JUNIOR TENNIS TOURNEY
China dominated proceedings with three of their players qualifying to play in the semi-finals in the ITF Junior Circuit Week One Tennis Tournament continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path yesterday. Yifan Sun along with Qianyu Liu and Jiaqi Huang were the three Chinese Girls who made it to the semi-finals.
Yifan and Qianyu defeated two of their compatriots Xiaoyan Xue and Yijia Jiao while Jiaqi overcame Jessica Christa Wirahadipoernmo of Indonesia by the identical winning margin of 2-0.
Meanwhile the bottom seed Sanjana Sirimala of India pulled off an easy win against the top seed Chui Kei Leung of Hong Kong 2-1 with scores of 6-2, 7-6(4).
Sri Lanka had three of their players in contention with fifth seed Anika Seneviratne bowing out in the first-round while Natasha Munaweera and Anjalika Kurera were ousted in the second-round.
Meanwhile, in the Boys’ category the eight players who have qualified to play in the quarter-finals were Jian Keong Takeshi Koey (Malaysia), Arjun Sriram (USA), V. M. Sandeep (India), Jasza Szajrych (Poland), Uddayyir Singh (India), Prasanna Pravin Bagade (India), Kai Shiang Yang (Chinese Taipei) and Aryan Bhatia (India).
Sri Lanka’s two participants Thehan Wijemanne lost in the first-round to Prasanna Pravin Bagade (India) and Kavisha Ratnayake was defeated in the second-round by V. M. Sandeep (India).
The tournament will be continued today.
