Australian assistance pledged to develop the Northern Province
Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Bryce Hutchesson met the Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray in the Governor’s Office in Jaffna yesterday.
The High Commissioner had exchanged views at length regarding the existing development works and the agricultural activities with the Governor in the north and said that proposals and ideas could be given as well as the machinery by the Australian government for the modernization of agricultural activities in the north. He also said that the Australian technology for the development of the Northern Province can be given and a programme can be prepared for the removal of landmines with the modern technology and

expressed his ability to give aid for disabled persons in the north. The documents had already been prepared regarding the disabled persons in the three districts in the north, according to him. He added that the Australian government would always give aid to Sri Lanka and expressed his willingness to give priority for the development of the north.
In the meantime, the northern province governor, Reginald Cooray said that the aid that is given for northern provincial council would be directed duly for the welfare of the people by a programme prepared by him and extended his gratitude on behalf of the Sri Lankan government for the assistance offered by the Australian government. The secretary of Northern provincial council L. Elangowan and the representatives of the Australian High Commission participated in the discussion.
