Another spectacular event in the school’s sports calendar, the Nestomalt All Island Schools Mini Marathon conducted by the Ministry of Sports and sponsored by Nestle Lanka PLC who lend a big hand in developing sports at junior level, ended with tremendous success at Kuliyapitiya.
The Nestomalt Mini Marathon which has been conducted for over three decades saw the participation of over 2,400 runners and was conducted under two categories namely Under15 (5km event) and Over15 (15km event).
The five kilometre race saw over 2,000 runners in the fray and the 15km comprised of over 400 runners from schools around the island which was flagged off opposite the Kuliyapitiya Technical College and took the route of Madampa Road, Bowatte Road, Old Kachcheri Road, Lionel Jayatileke Mawatha, Hettipola, Narammala and back to the Kuliyapitiya Technical College.
The 15km saw Eranda Madusanka Nayanajith (Janadipathi MV, Ambagasdowa) with a time of 48.45 and K.M. Parami Wasanthi (Kuliyapitiya Central) with a time of 57.58 emerge winners in the boys and girls events while R.M. Kaveesha Induwara (Janadipathi MV, Ambagasdowa) with a time of 16.13 and P.H. Lakmini Dulanjali (Siridhamma MV, Galle) with a time of 20.36 coming out on top in the 5kms boys and girls events.
President’s College, Ambagasdowa and Kuliyapitiya Central apart from producing the two winners also saw two of their runners taking the second slots namely, H.M. Chaminda Nuwan Kumara (Boys) and H.M.B.A. Herath (Girls).
The winners and runners up in the four events of the two categories apart from receiving trophies were presented with cash awards. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Minister of Education was the Chief Guest and gave away the awards.
