- BY SANDUN A. JAYASEKERA

President Maithripala Sirisena said they were able to overcome three garbage dumps such as Meethotamulla garbage dump, Kolonnawa Garbage dump and the SAITM garbage dump.

He made these remarks while participating in the ceremony to vest the Lake Crescent Residencies at Mandawila, Mulleriyawa with the public recently.

“It is true that these issues caused damage to the country. However, we were able to monitor and overcome them properly,” he said.

President Sirisena says the present government has been able to make the programme of providing a safe house with all the basic facilities to every family in the country a reality, due to the housing policy implemented with a clear national plan. This housing project comprises of 500 housing units and it was constructed under the Urban Regeneration Programme of the Urban Development Authority under the guidance of the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry.

Professionals, administrative officials, journalists, and technology officers who work in the private and public sectors in the country’s main cities and semi-urban areas but are unable to afford to reside in their work area, are target groups of this project. It is significant that bank loan facilities are also arranged to purchase these houses. The five storeyed housing complex is located on five acres of land and these houses are equipped with modern facilities including drinking water, electricity, wide roads and water purification centres.

Each house comprises 44 square metres and has two bedrooms, visitors’ room, a bath room, a kitchen and a balcony. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Colombo District Member of Parliament S.m. marikkar and Chairman of the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat Prassanna Solangaarachchi, were present at the occasion.
