- BY NAYANAJEEWA BANDARA

A young woman who was abducted by two men at the Malattawala junction in Wellawaya was saved, and the suspects were caught and handed over to the police by the public.

Sources said the main suspect (30) was a resident of Mawelagama in Koslanda and a leading businessman running a tourist hotel, while the other was a security guard in the hotel. The victim from Hansagama at Kalanimulla in Angoda had been on a visit to a relative’s house in Diyaluma, Koslanda at the time of the incident.

Investigations revealed that the main suspect had proposed to the young woman but her family, who knew he was married, had refused. On the day of the incident, she along with her aunt, had depended on the suspect for help to purchase a pendant from a jewellery store known to him and made a trip to Wellawaya in his trishaw. On their way back, another had boarded the trishaw. When the young woman’s aunt alighted from the vehicle, the suspects had sped away with the young woman on board.

The suspects were produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate and remanded. However, she had managed to escape the suspects by jumping out of the moving trishaw,

but sustained injuries in the scuffle. She was admitted to the Monaragala Hospital.

Wellawaya Police OIC CZI G.M. Jayaratne is conducting further investigations on the instructions of ASP D.U.P. Amaratunga and SP Sujith Wedamulla.
