Royal - Gateway Basketball encounter on Sep 22
The annual basketball affair between Royal College and Gateway College, Colombo, played for the Alles – Gunasekara trophy, is scheduled to be held on September 22 at the Henry Pedris Courts.this was announced at a media briefing held at the SSC premises on Wednesday.
The event would see one of the leading national schools go head to head against a premier international school, making it the first of its kind.apart from the main encounter in the Under-19 age group, an Under-15 match will also take place.the girl’s invitation Under-19 game between Gateway and Ladies’ College is sure to add colour and diversity to the day. The cup is named after two key personalities connected to the two schools, namely the late
R.I.T. Alles and the late E. Christie Gunasekara, who did yeomen services to Gateway and Royal respectively.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman, Gateway, said that the encounter is a special one and it would help both schools immensely.“the event bridges two aspects of schools in Sri Lanka, national and international, and thus would help the sport immensely.also this is an opening to other sports as well. Like cricket and rugby, this encounter would be played as a big-match,” he said.
The first encounter was won by Royal,after a close call.the scores of 46 – 43, shows how intense the match was.
Royal will be led by Heshan Meethalawa while Aaron Fonseka will captain the Gateway outfit.
Monash University Australia and Malaysia have come forward as the main sponsors.
