SENIOR JOHN TARBAT ATHLETICS FROM SEP 19 TO 21 IN COLOMBO

Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) will sponsor the Ritzbury 88th Sir John Tarbat Senior and Junior Athletic Championsh­ips for the eighth successive year. The event is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Associatio­n (SLSAA) and the Senior Championsh­ips will be held from September 19 to 21 at the Sugathadas­a Stadium, Colombo.

The Junior Championsh­ip will be held from October 17 to 19 at the National Stadium in Anuradhapu­ra.

The three age categories in the Senior Athletics Championsh­ips are: Under-16, Under-18 and Under 20 (Boys and Girls).

Neville Rodrigo, Secretary, Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Associatio­n, said that over 4,500 athletes will participat­e at the Senior Meet.

The performanc­es of the senior meet will pave the way to form a Youth Athletic Pool for the 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championsh­ips.

At the meet held last year Maris Stella College, Negombo won the Boys Championsh­ip. The Girls event was won by Walala Ratnayake MMV.

Over 5,000 athletes will take part in the Final Stage of the Junior Championsh­ips.

There were three Provincial Stages to select the athletes for the final stage and they were held in Hanwella, Bogambara and Polonnaruw­a.

The four age groups for the Junior Meet are: Under-12, Under-13, Under-14 and Under 15.

Last year St. Joseph’s College, Colombo emerged Boys Champions and the Girls Champions was annexed by Janadhipat­hi Balika, Nawala.
