NEW LAWS TO BE INTRODUCED TO SAFEGUARD CHILDREN: RANIL

- BY YOHAN PERERA

New laws will be introduced soon to safeguard children who are in their early childhood, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe expressed this sentiment at the opening of Santhi Children’s home in Rakwana constructed by Bodhiraja Foundation headed by Sangha Nayaka of Southern Province Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thera last evening.

“The government has recognized the importance of safeguarding children and helping them become good citizens right from their early childhood. Therefore the government will bring in laws to ensure safety of children right from their early childhood and to help them become good citizens of the country,” the Prime Minister said.

“Behaviour of children when they become adults depends on what they learn during early childhood. Therefore we decided to bring in laws to ensure children are brought up in the proper manner,” he added.

The Prime Minister added that the government had increased funds for social welfare despite high debt services as it has seen the importance of building a future of the minors.

Sangha Nayaka of Sabaragamuwa Venerable Bandagiriye Somaratana Thera said the values which the children instill on the society when they grow up are the ones they learn in their early childhood.

“When they see their parents fighting the children tends to believe it is a norm when it comes to marriage. Therefore it is important to instill good values in them from the tender age,” the Thera said.
