HEFTY SALARY HIKE TO 250,000 TEACHERS IN THE OFFING

Govt. decides to reverse wheat flour price hike

- BY KELUM BANDARA

The Cabinet yesterday decided to reverse the five-rupee price hike imposed by Prima Company on a kilo of wheat flour on the basis that it has been done in an ad-hoc manner, it is learnt.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has decided to offer a hefty salary increase to some 250,000 teachers, in a bid to rectify salary anomalies. The minister has appointed a committee of officials to look into the matter and propose means of streamlining the efficiency among teachers.

At a meeting held last week with trade union representatives of the education sector, the minister had requested them to submit proposals to the committee and cooperate with the task.

“I admit that teachers draw one of the lowest salaries in the public service. They also have salary anomalies and their pay has not been revised over the years. My intention is to give them a respectable salary. I hope we will be able to increase the efficiency and productivity of teachers by introducing these reforms to the education sector. There are seven categories and 13 salary scales in this service,” the minister said.

The salary hike is expected to be effective from next year.
