SL in better position compared with other countries: UNP

- BY SHEAIN FERNANDOPULLE

Sri Lanka was in a better position in terms of depreciation of domestic currency in line with the Dollar when compared with other countries, Home Affairs State Minister J. C. Alawathuwala said.

Addressing a news briefing, he said it was a common thing to experience depreciation nowadays as far as the current world economy was concerned.

“When compared to countries like India, Pakistan, Philippines, United Kingdom, Russia and Turkey, the rupee of Sri Lanka had depreciated only by 7 percent. Russia being a powerful country is also experiencing depreciation and Russian ruble has depreciated by 18 percent,” the state minister said.

“Some groups including the joint opposition are attempting to create a false picture on this matter. Actually, the situation is far more in contrast to what others say in this regard,” he added. Meanwhile, he said the incumbent Government has made a considerable progress in terms of economy and development. “We have been able to maintain an effective economic policy that had resulted in a proper economic management,” he said. “The programmes like Gamperaliya project and Enterprise Sri Lanka have facilitated the people of this country and would accelerate the economy. Enterprise Sri Lanka would assist the newly emerging entrepreneurs,” he added.
