World Habitat Day 2018

Becoming a “Waste-wise” City

- By Mayuri Jayasinghe

Mother Earth is the only place we can call our home, and as the major occupants of this planet, we as a human race have a great responsibility in sustaining the health of the Earth. The first Monday of October had been declared by the United Nations as World Habitat Day. It is important to make sure that our planet Earth is pollution free and devoid of natural disasters caused by man. On World Habitat day we as a community should reflect upon our countries, cities and towns and also to make sure that people have proper shelter etc. Typically every year World Habitat Day is celebrated by a theme. Last year’s theme was “Affordable Housing”, where communities concentrated on making housing affordable to all. This year the theme centers around Municipal Solid Waste Management with the main global observance taking place in Kenya. The amount of waste produced by individuals is growing daily and often costs local authorities a large proportion of their budget. Poor solid waste collection and disposal can lead to serious health problems from uncontrolled dump sites and waste burning. It also leads to polluted air, soil and water. Therefore government bodies encourage on adopting waste-wise cities -this educates the public on how to dispose of their garbage and other waste matters in a more environment friendly way so that the habitat is not harmed in any way. It also advises cities as a whole on developing landfills to effectively get rid of other waste. It touches upon the practices of recycling and reusing of certain materials so that there is less waste to deal with. Looking after the welfare of our towns and cities is everyone’s responsibility, for it is like improving and decorating our home for our future generations. Our planet can only thrive if we all collectively and positively work together. Do something positive to celebrate your environment this World Habitat Day!
