World Children’s Day 2018

- By Mayuri Jayasinghe

World Children’s Day was established to focus attention on the plight of the world’s children. Usually observed on the 20th of November, each country has its own specific day to bring light to the problems children face. Sri Lanka celebrates World Children’s Day on the 1st of October. Through the events and celebrations held in schools and organizations, we as a community, honour our children. This day also sheds light on the various programs, associations and societies set up to look after the welfare of our children in distress, those who are orphaned or in situations of poverty. Through these government initiatives we are able to help all our little brothers and sisters. Statistics show that there are about a billion children in poverty around the world. It is important for us to keep talking about these problems, for as these issues are brought into the public light, their plight is not forgotten and we can activate a change for the better. This year the world focus is on the colour “blue” to indicate World Children’s Day. Therefore all the decor and badges etc are all done in the colour blue to show the common theme. Here are some positive things you can consider doing on World Children’s day to make a difference. Celebrate by wearing the colour blue on that day. In this way your message stands out that you are raising awareness on the plight of children on this day. It could start a discussion, open up a project or create a solution to a problem that has to be addressed.

As a school, you could have a bake sale as a fundraiser. Use blue as the predominate colour, wear blue badges, have group discussions or presentations. Educate and encourage your fellow students to take an active role in helping children in impoverished areas.

You can also become a contributor to an impoverished child’s education A small contribution every month, will help these children achieve their long term dreams.

Children are the most vulnerable individuals in our communities so it is very important to have systems and measures to keep them safe and sound. They are our future and it is up to us to make our future strong. Be active this World Children’s Day and make a change, a change for the better!
