GMOA urges Prez to intervene
There are confusions about the steps that could be taken by the SLMC because of these issues. The Govt. has decided to abolish SAITM owing to many defects of its standards
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday in a letter urged President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene in to the issue arisen after the Supreme Court upholding the Appeal Court ruling which had directed the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to register MBBS graduates of SAITM.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told a news conference that there were possible contradictions between the Supreme Court’s judgement and the Act passed in Parliament with this regard.
“There are confusions about the steps that could be taken by the SLMC because of these issues. The government has decided to abolish SAITM owing to many defects of its standards. Even an Act was passed in Parliament securing the future of SAITM students,” he said.
“President Sirisena has attempted and was committed to solve the SAITM issue during past years. However, the situation has turned to be more challenging at present,” he added. He said Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne was in an attempt to create disturbances for the healthcare system in the country by several moves and added the reawakening of the SAITM issue was one such disturbance.
He said the GMOA was willing to discuss this matter with President Sirisena and requested for an immediate discussion from him to end the SAITM controversy in a fruitful manner.
