Keeping your pets safe

- BY RIHAAB MOWLANA

Facebook has been inundated with an increasing number of posts about lost pets. Pedigree pets especially are frequently stolen for breeding purposes. In order to protect your pets and keep them safe, there are a few steps you can take.

1. Collars / tags

Make sure your pet wears a collar and ID tags with an up to date contact number. If your pet mistakenly wanders out of your home, there’s a better chance a good samaritan will find it and contact you.

2. Microchips

Have your pets microchipped. Microchips are an implanted form of identification equipped to access your contact information when scanned at a veterinary clinic or shelter.

3. Spay/neuter

According to studies, animals that are sterilised are less likely to roam.

4. Safety measures

Put them on a leash when you are out and about. Leaving them off leash gives them more chances to wander off, unless your pet had received extensive leash training. If your house has low walls, ensure you are around when your pet is allowed outside to play. This way, you can not only ensure your pet doesn’t escape, but your presence will mean no one will attempt to steal your pet. Don’t leave your pet unattended: If you need to leave your dog tied up outside a store while you shop, for instance, you are putting your pet at high risk of getting stolen. The friendlier the dog, the easier it is for someone to steal it.
