“THE INCORRUPTIBLES OF THE WORLD”

-

How is it that the bodies of some people remain incorrupt and fresh even after several years of burial? The change that is brought about in a person's body after death is initially the stiffening of the muscles which is called Rigor Mortis and corruption or decay caused by the attack of microorganisms and the biblical admonition to man from God after the fall of man “thou art dust and to dust shall thou return” following burial is inevitable in normal circumstances.

In a Village in Denmark, two villagers found a dead body perfectly preserved in an area where construction was being carried out. The Police were summoned as homicide was suspected but after detailed investigation better sense prevailed and scientists and archeologists were called in and the body handed over for their study. Their report created a sensation internationally as they reported that the body was that of a prehistoric man dating back to 4 B.C. How could a body be preserved for such a long time was the question on everyone's lips. The soil and the area the body was found was closely examined and it was found to be peat bog and the body had not been exposed to Oxygen, or moisture and the soil was acidi ferous and thus escaped the attack of microorganisms which causes decay of the body.

Many such bodies have been found all over the world in similar situations which bring about preservation of dead bodies.of course the most common way of preserving bodies is the process of embalming which is a chemical process and is temporary. My book, The

Incorruptibles of the World dwells mainly on another area where it has been found that bodies buried under normal conditions of holy Christian persons for several years have been found to be incorrupt on exhumation. The scientific community is unable to explain this phenomenon as even the initial process of Rigor Mortis does not occur and the muscles remain supple in some even after over 50 years. In some persons a heavenly fragrance permeated the air when the body was exhumed. This phenomenon even baffles the Catholic church but nevertheless incorruptibility of a body is not a qualification for sainthood. There are a number of persons whose bodies have remained incorrupt for several years but are not saints and not even beatified.

In the course of my evaluation I have identified 128 persons whose bodies have been found to be incorrupt. In some persons only certain parts of a person's body are incorrupt.

A case in point is the body of the revered Saint in Sri Lanka, St. Anthony who is acknowledged as being an excellent preacher, his body had decayed and the skeleton was visible, but the Tongue remained incorrupt and is kept in a reliquary in the Basilica in Padua. These Holy persons are dispersed around the world and in my book the analysis is made in the alphabetical order of countries beginning with Australia. An announcement was made in August this year in Sydney, that a simple nun who cared for the sick and poor but lived in pain throughout her life and whose body was found incorrupt after 15 years of burial, has been declared “A Servant of God” which is the first step towards sainthood. this incidentally is the first time a body of a holy Catholic person was found incorrupt in Australia.

Reading the life stories of these 128 holy persons provides interesting revelations about the gifts they possessed while on earth such as healing, bilocation, prophecy and levitation and also their accomplishments in the rehabilitation of youth, caring for the poor and in the growth of Christian Education in the world. It is also a journey though the dark corridors of the History of the Catholic Church fraught with eras of persecution, civil and international wars, heresies, and the relocation of the Pope from Rome to Avignon in France and back to Rome.
