World Teachers’ Day 2018

“A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart”.

- By Mayuri Jayasinghe

Teachers are the investment a society makes in the future of their youth. They have been instrumental in moulding our children to achieve their maximum potential and beyond. Necessitating the fact that these individuals need to be honoured for their hard work and dedication, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established World Teachers’ Day on 5th October, 1994 which is now celebrated annually in over 100 countries. In helping the progress on teachers, certain methods and practices are put into fruition. These include :

To activate a support system for teachers all over the world;

Evaluate the employment conditions and focus on salaries and benefits given; Good opportunities for career growth, offering teachers a beneficial future; Making sure adequate training programs are set for teachers to improve their skills continuously; Promoting the option of teaching for future graduates at the university.

These are just some of the factors looked at on World Teacher’s Day in a global setting. But as students, here are a few things you can do to show your appreciation to your teachers: Give them tokens of appreciation such as flowers, handmade cards or chocolates;

Have plays or assemblies to appreciate their service; Respect your teachers on a daily basis and appreciate and acknowledge the fact that they are trying to help you achieve the best of yourself.

Teachers are indeed the backbone of every society. Teachers, in our life are not merely educators; they are motivators, problem solvers, ones who understand our full potential and guide us into our careers in life. Away from our parents for the day, teachers at school are the ones who have our best interests at heart and therefore they need to be appreciated in return for the positive impact they make.
