Bizarre Celeb Beauty Secrets

- BY RIHAAB MOWLANA

Our social media feeds are regularly inundated with endless selfies, cat memes and the occasional quote reminding you to love yourself “just the way you are”. That may all be well and good, but many go to great extents to live up to the beauty standards set forth by Hollywood’s elite. Getting plucked and primped within an inch of their lives is only the beginning in their pursuit for “beauty”.

Unlike us mere mortals, celebrities have unprecedented access to avant garde beauty treatments. And in order to stay at the top of their game, many celebs choose to veer off the beaten path and experiment with very unorthodox methods to stay beautiful.

You know what they say: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But if that means you have to take the road seldom taken to get there, you may want to think again. Especially if that road is one frequented by certain celebrities. Who said staying beautiful was fun? On a side note, you probably shouldn’t try these treatments at home.

Sheep Placenta Facial

Ever wondered how One Directioner Harry Styles maintains his youthful glow? Sheep placenta facials. This 90 minute treatment, offered at Dr Harold Lancer’s Beverly Hills clinic, uses placenta from prime New Zealand livestock, which are full of nutrients that fight freeradical skin damage. The facial will set you back a cool $480.

Vampire Facial

On an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim was nice enough to share the secret to her beauty with her legions of fans. It IS as gross as it sounds - the $885 Vampire Facial involves using the patient’s own blood splattered into the face using tiny acupuncture style needles - to enhance the skin. Apparently, platelets are said to stimulate collagen levels and elastin growth. Anna Friel, Gisele Bundchen and Kerry Katona also swear by this treatment.

Bird Poop Facial

This therapy - favoured by Victoria & David Beckham, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes - involves mixing excrement from a nightingale with rice bran and water. Bird Poop Mask, also known as Geisha Facial, is made from “products” collected from the Japanese island of Kyushu and costs $265 for a 60 minute treatment. The excrement acts as an exfoliant and unclogs pores and aids shine.

Caviar & Carat Facial.

Favoured by Mila Kunis and Sports Illustrated model Bar Rafaeli, this facial relies on caviar ampoule, honey, sea buckthorn and gold which contain anti aging properties, help brighten skin and improves elasticity. Turns out gold is cheaper than nightingale excrement since this treatment costs a comparatively cheap $185.

To me, beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing or accepting who you are
