WP Education Ministry violates Grade 1 admission circular issued by line ministry

Despite the circular issued by the Education Ministry to enroll Grade 1 students, the Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkar­a had instructed all Zonal Education Offices in the province to follow directives issued by him, it was learned. According to sources, all the schools in the country should adhere to the circular No.24/2018 issued by the Education Ministry when enrolling Grade 1 students.

According to the circular, under the eligibilit­y criteria of residency certificat­ion, if the ownership of residence is proved either parents are entitled to gain 23 points at the interview. However, the Governor overruling the circular issued by the linear ministry had instructed the Western Province Education Director to increase the point up to 26.

In a letter dated September 26, signed by Western Province Education Director the zonal offices were instructed to exhibit the amended list of names under new criteria by October 5.

Secretary Jospeh Stalin said that the Governors move had created several issues and he does not have authority to violate circulars issued by the linear ministry.

He also said that with the sudden decision the principals of the Western Province schools were irritated as they have to put extra effort to amend the student list.

CTU requested the Education Minister to intervene and rectify the situation or amend the circular to benefit the entire education sector.

Arbitraril­y violated the circular to enroll grade 1 students, issued by the Education Ministry.
