PROJECT TO PREVENT INFLOW OF SEA WATER DURING DROUGHT

The government has inaugurate­d a project to prevent the pollution of water supply in the Kalutara District due to the inflow of sea water into the Kaluganga during drought every year.

District Parliament­arian Laxman Wijemanna told the meeting of district coordinati­ng committee yesterday that the project would cost Rs. 32 million. He said the Kudaganga would be used as the main water resource under the project and that water would be transmitte­d to Kethhena water treatment plant and distribute­d.

He pointed out that the pollution of water supply in the Kalutara District during the drought had been a burning issue and that the proposed project would resolve it.

Project Director Mangalika Wijesinghe said that a water tower would be erected at Kolemodara area to transmit water to the Kethhena water treatment plant of which the capacity would be increased to supply water to Matugama, Agalawatta and Aluthgama areas. She said the project would include two storage reservoirs at Matugama and Dodangoda with the capacity of 1500cu.ft and 2000cu.ft and water towers at Neboda, Agalawatta and Matugama Kanda. The Project Director further said that the project would be completed by May 2020 and that 573,000 consumers in 269

Grama Niladari divisions would be benefited by the project in 2030.
