Motorcycle­s for Best Athletes at Youth Games

The National Youth Services Council (NYSC) has arranged the final stages of 30th National Youth Games from October 25 to October 28 at the Kotawila Sports Complex, Matara.

This is the second occasion that a sports festival is taking place at the Kotawila Sports Complex in Matara. In 2017 the National Sports Festival conducted by the Ministry of Sports took place at this complex.

The meet is conducted under the guidance of Eranda Weliange, Chairman and Director General of the National Youth Games. This is the fourth time that that he is conducting the Youth Games.

Over 3,000 athletes representi­ng all districts will be taking part in the meet under two age categories: Under-20 and Over-20.

The festival will include 16 athletic events (men and women) as well as team events such as Volleyball, Netball, Kabadi and Football.

The Best Athletes in two categories (men and women) will be presented with four motorcycle­s. In the event a National Record is shattered the athlete will receive Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 for a Youth Games Record.

The Games Torch will be lit by G.I.M. Fernando of the Galle District, D.T.A. De Silva of the Kandy District, D.A.G.J.P. Wimalasiri of the Kandy District and Vidusha Lakshani of the Gampaha District.

Fernando and De Silva were last year’ Best Men’s and Women’s athletes while Wimalasiri and Lakshani were the Best Men’s and Women’s athletes in the Over-20 category last year.

The opening ceremony will take place on October 25 at 4pm where Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesi­nghe will be the Chief Guest.

The closing ceremony will take place on October 25 where Youth and Southern Developmen­t Minister Sagala Ratnayake will be the Chief Guest.

Last year the overall champions were Gampaha District while the runners-up were Kurunegala District.
