Coalition Govt. smooth sailing despite UNPSLFP differences
Although policies and principles of the two leading political parties -- the UNP and the SLFP -- contradict one another, the coalition government has completed more than three years in office without any major problem.
However, the joint opposition is all out to topple the government in order to elect MR to the Prime Ministerial post. It is very sad to note that it had planned this programme at a time when the country is ailing economically. The JO blames the government for failing to resolve the economic crisis, but what has it done to make the situation any better?
On the other hand, the differences between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have reached the peak. Against this backdrop, those who elected the President wonder what may happen to all the promises he made including abolishing the executive presidency, forming independent commissions and suing corrupt politicians.
Recently, we saw the President donating Rs.1 million to the family members of Police Sergeant Sanath Gunawardena who was suspended for his violent behaviour with arms in Thebuwana. This is unacceptable. It is the duty of the Police Commission to look into this matter without any political interference. I believe the President set a bad example by this move. Politicians should take policy decisions by allowing public servants to do their administrative work independently.
