WIGGY FORMS NEW POLITICAL PARTY
New party named as Tamil People’s Alliance
Former Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran yesterday announced the formation of a new political party, the Tamil People’s Alliance (TPA) or the Thamil Makkal Koottani and his departure from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).
Mr Wigneswaran was fielded as Chief Minister Candidate by the TNA when the election was held for the first NPC in 2013.
Making the announcement at the Tamil Peoples Council (TPC) meeting convened at the Nadaraja Parameswary Hall in Jaffna yesterday, the former Justice said he would continue to be in politics as a member of the new party.
The Chief Minister earlier defined the TPC as a nonpolitical entity stating that any politician could attend the council meetings irrespective of political differences.
Therefore, the new party has been formed with the support of several other political parties.
The absence of TNA stalwarts including Mavai Senathirajah and M.A Sumanthiran was noted at the TPC meeting.
The new political party is expected to adopt a harder line than the TNA when it comes to matters related to devolution of power and post-war accountability.
Wigneswaran announced the formation of his new party after the official term of the Northern Provincial Council expired.
