“Can be stepped up if threats increase”

- BY AJITH SIRIWARDANA

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s security can be stepped up if threats to his life increase, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday in response to concerns raised by JO MP Dinesh Gunawardane.

The Prime Minister said Mr. Rajapaksa had been provided with special security for his residences in Wijerama, Medamulana and Carlton House. “As he is engaged in active politics he has been provided with STF personnel as well,” he said.

MP Gunawardane said the head of VIP security had informed Mr. Rajapaksa’s team that security had to be tightened as threats had increased. “No action has been taken to increase Mr. Rajapaksa’s security even after the reports given by the security officials,” he said and asked whether the government would increase his security.

MP Wimal Weerawansa said Mr. Rajapaksa’s chief security officer had been summoned by the officer in charge of VIP security and informed him that Mr. Rajapaksa had death threats but nothing had been mentioned about any special security to be provided.

“Talking about security threats is not enough. We urge the government to take action,” he said.

Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said he would instruct the IGP to summon Mr. Rajapaksa’s chief security officer to discuss the matter.
