This holiday season, Cinnamon Life is set to bring the best of the West End to Colombo, with Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus’ worldwide smash-hit Broadway musical MAMMA MIA!. As we draw closer to the live event which will be presented at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre from 22nd to 30th December, now is the ideal time to take a look back and celebrate the flair and sounds that ABBA shared with the world. Mamma Mia is packed with some of ABBA’S best-loved hits and is a production that is heralded as the ultimate feel good tale of love, laughter and friendship.

MAMMA MIA! is a musical that was written by the British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on a series of worldfamous songs composed by Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus, who are former members of the worldrenowned Swedish pop group ABBA. Featured in the musical are some of the group’s best-loved and most memorable hits such as Super Trouper, Lay All Your Love on Me, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Thank You for the Music, Money, Money, Money, The Winner Takes it All, Voulez-vous, SOS and the extremely popular Dancing Queen.

Having been formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972, ABBA journeyed on a long road filled with moments of success, triumph, separations and reunions that shook and shaped the world of pop music over several decades.

The name ABBA which is an acronym of the first letters of the first names of the four members - Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-frid Lyngstad, stands synonymous with the fact that each member played a core and indispensable role in bringing the band to life.

During 1974 and 1982, ABBA went on to become one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping charts across the globe, with backto-back hits.

After ABBA disbanded in 1982, Andersson and Ulvaeus ventured into writing music for theatre, while Lyngstad and Fältskog pursued solo careers in pop music. It was in 1999 that Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus adapted some of their hits for the world-famous musical MAMMA MIA!, which was later followed up with a film and sequel.

Beyond the music that is performed throughout MAMMA MIA!, distinct elements of ABBA’S flair and influence can be seen in the production. Featuring upbeat dance moves and colourful seventiesinspired costumes, MAMMA MIA! is infused with countless nods to the distinct style of ABBA. Whether it’s the glittery bell-bottoms that the lead characters wear through different performances or the dance moves that Donna and the Dynamos break into, there are many elements that are inspired by ABBA which can be seen throughout the entire musical.

Make sure to book your ticket today and watch Donna and the Dynamos perform in yet another world-class production in Colombo.
