Gammanpila asks Ranil to first comply and then complain

- BY SHEAIN FERNANDOPULLE

While stressing that removing Ranil Wickremesinghe from the premiership and appointing Mahinda Rajapaksa as the new Prime Minister was not unconstitutional, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila asked Mr. Wickremesinghe to first comply and then complain.

Addressing a news briefing, he said there were three options for Ranil Wickremesinghe to secure power in parliament and be the Prime Minster.

“If Mr. Wickremesinghe thinks that it was not done in accordance with the Constitution, he can file a case in the Supreme Court or seek public opinion on premiership or bringing a No-confidence Motion against Mahinda Rajapaksa,” Gammanpila said.

“The United National Party (UNP) exactly knows that the whole procedure has been done in line with the legal framework,” he said.

Meanwhile, he added that the translation of the Constitution in English was incompatible to that of the translation of the Sinhala one.

“The English translation does not reflect the removal of the Prime Minter whereas the Sinhala one clearly envisages the removal of Prime Minster,” Gammanpila said.

“It seems that Mr. Wickremesinghe has only referred to the English translation”, Gammanpila added.

He said in the event of any inconsistency occurs in the process of interpretation, the Sinhala text of the Constitution will be authentic and thus the Prime Minter had to comply with the order of the President.
