- BY SHEHAN CHAMIKA SILVA

UNP MPS Palitha The warapperuma and Hesha Vithanage who were arrested over an alleged attack on Major (Rtd) Ajith Prasanna during a protest near Temple Trees, were ordered to be released on bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake yesterday. They were released on one surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each.

The Kollupitiya Police arrested the suspects after they surrendered to the police yesterday. Police informed Court that according to the complainant (Ajith Prasanna) the suspects had attacked the complainant with a traffic cone when he was passing Temple Trees on November 1, 2018 when UNP supporters were staging a protest in front of Temple Trees.

The allegations were levelled against the suspects under sections 314 (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 316 of the Penal Code. The defence however was of the view that first suspect, Palitha Thewarapperuma was in fact attempting to settle the brawl, which occurred between Ajith Prasanna and the protestors due to provocative comments of the complainant. They said the second suspect was never at the place when Mr. prasanna was beaten. therefore the defence requested the matter to be forwarded before the Mediation Board for Settlement Subsequently, Magistrate Dissanayake questioned the police over any reasons that can be considered to reject bail for the suspects. Police said the aggrieved party had been discharged from hospital and there were no reasons to object for bail.
