Fraud­ster who al­legedly plun­dered Rs. 70 mn nabbed

A sus­pect wanted in con­nec­tion with a se­ries of frauds amount­ing to more than Rs.70 mil­lion was ar­rested by the Mount Lavinia Divi­sion Law En­force­ment Unit af­ter storm­ing his hide­out at Ran­mu­tu­gala, Kadawatha.

Po­lice said the sus­pect had been wanted in con­nec­tion with sev­eral cases for un­der­tak­ing to build houses and col­lect­ing money but fail­ing to fin­ish the work he had un­der­taken. In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that he had placed ad­ver­tise­ments in the press pass­ing him­self off as the man­ag­ing di­rec­tor of a prop­erty sales and con­struc­tion com­pany.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that he had mort­gaged two lands to a pri­vate bank and ob­tained a loan of Rs.29 mil­lion and sold it to two other in­di­vid­u­als us­ing forged deeds

He was ar­rested dur­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions into com­plaints made by the vic­tims of his de­cep­tion af­ter he failed to re­turn the money given to him by them. He was said to be un­der ar­rest war­rant for evad­ing court in con­nec­tion with three cases brought against him.

A se­nior po­lice of­fi­cial said that the Mount Lavinia Po­lice had re­ceived seven com­plaints against him, Mir­i­hana po­lice two while the CID had also re­ceived two com­plaints of fraud.

OIC Mount Lavinia Law En­force­ment Unit SI Amila Priyankara Abey­weera, Sergeant 33704 Gu­rus­ingha, PCS 2858 Siri­war­dene, 74943 Wi­malasiri, 89399 Gi­han and 80268 San­jeewa are con­duct­ing fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions on the in­struc­tions of HQI Mount Lavinia Po­lice CI Ro­han Push­paku­mara, ASPS Sa­man Wedage, Sa­man Jayasekara led by SSP Roshan Wi­jesinghe.
