Royal, Visakha come out on top in Colombo Zone
The Colombo Zonal of the Kids’ Athletics Championship conducted by the primary section of the zonal education office Colombo, which is one of the qualifying events for the All Island Championship scheduled to be held in early December saw Royal College, Colombo and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo come out on top by bagging five of the six age group titles held at the Royal College Ground in Reid Avenue recently.
The Kids’athletics Championship conducted by the Minister of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd held for school children in Grade 3, 4 and 5 saw the participation of 33 schools from the Western Province comprising of 864 kids in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
Similar qualifying championships are held in all the provinces with the top three schools in the boys’ and girls’ categories being eligible to compete in the All Island Kids’ Athletics Championship.
The programme comprising of five events namely, hurdles, rope skipping, forward squatting, cross hopping and knee throw is conducted with the aim of encouraging school children to get involved in sports activities.
Ananda College, Colombo took the top place in the grade three (boys) category, while Visakha Vidyalaya took the girls’ title. In the other two grades (four and five), Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya made a clean sweep, ending up with three titles.
