MAMMA MIA!

NOSTALGIA AND SUCCESS

- BY RIHAAB MOWLANA

Mamma Mia! Here I go again. My my, how can I resist you?

Lyrics that align perfectly with our love for the movie that was perfectly interwoven with the timeless music of ABBA, and our excitement for the West End musical about to grace our shores this December! The festive season is about to get a lot more exciting as Cinnamon Life presents superhit West End musical Mamma Mia! at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre.

If there’s one reason the movie struck a chord in our hearts, it was, without a doubt the nostalgia brought on by the timeless music of ABBA. ABBA a Swedish pop/dance group are easily among the most popular and well known international pop groups of all time. The quartet also continually topped charts around the world, cementing their position as one of the most influential musicians.

Audiences and fans both young and young at heart alike, danced and sang along at the movie, rendering it an immense success, so there was little doubt a musical would soon follow. Having envisioned the theatrical potential of ABBA song “The Winner Takes It All”, it didn’t take long for Judy Cramer - producer of the musical - to convince an initially sceptical Ulvaeus and Andersson to come on board.

The Mamma Mia! musical went on to become one of the most successful productions and rightfully boasts numerous accomplishments: it’s the seventh longest-running show in West End history and the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history. It had a successful 14 year run in Broadway until September 2015. Mamma Mia! has also been played in more than 50 countries in all 6 continents, and has been translated into 26 languages. It was also nominated for a host of awards including Tony Awards and even a Grammy Award. The musical includes such hits as “Super Trouper”, “Lay All Your Love on Me”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Money, Money, Money”, “The Winner Takes It All”, “Voulez-vous”, “SOS” and the title track.
