It was a serious situation when the country’s security establishments are functioning without the knowledge of the President who is in-charge of the subject of defence and the county’s future security will be at stake, said Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera, yesterday addressing a media briefing held in Embilipitiya.

It is very deplorable situation when one witness what happened when a group of Monks who arrived to present a memorandum seeking freedom for Ven Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera. What we saw in the Mass Media was an inhuman tragedy which was disheartening.

President had summoned a group of these Monks and had a discussion. He had apologized saying that he was unaware of the incident. He has also promised to respond with regard to the request made by the Monks. It is very good, but many issues have now been cropped up, as the subject of law and order now comes under the purview of the President and doubts now arise as to who is behind this incident superseding the powers of the President. If these types of incidents are taking place without the knowledge of the President, it poses a severe threat on the law and order of the country. If action has been initiated without any orders from a responsible Ministry, by the police and the security divisions serious doubts arise in the minds of the masses. Doubts also arise as to how the security divisions could act in that manner and on whose orders. This is a serious matter and we direct our questions to the President.

It is important that a proper environment should be in place in order for law and order to function efficiently. The President cannot escape from this situation by saying he was unaware of it. If a similar or a worse situation arises tomorrow who would be held responsible, the Thera stressed
