Let's go fishing...

Teaching children life skills.

-

On a weary Monday morning, one child screams that he cannot find his socks, another shouts that the water bottle they preferred is missing and would like ME to look for it, then the cherry on the ice-cream sundae was the pre-teen suggesting I come talk to a teacher who my daughter felt was being unnecessarily harsh on her. Stop. Wait. And reel myself back from blowing a gasket and erupting like an angered mummy volcano.were these spoilt, indifferent, lazy sounding children really mine? In actuality they are not problematic as they sound.

In-fact they can be quite sweet and helpful individuals. But in that moment of time, when all is usually done for them they lacked the presence of mind and the life skills needed to self-motivate themselves and conquer their troublesome situations. Rather than stop, think and find a solution to their small but irritating problems, they decided to call for the quickest solution to the problem, MUM. In hindsight it might not seem like such a problem, because even we in our adulthood do look to our Mother's for some help and guidance at times. But there will be a time, when your children, have to leave the safety of your own household, to pursue studies and jobs. What's to become of them then when they are not able to solve even the menial of problems like missing socks. Teaching your children life skills and giving them that independence to live without our interference constantly, has to begin now. We must inform, educate and solve their success and failure now so that they develop that confidence to thrive in our absence.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for the day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”
