COLOUR YOUR MORNING WITH HEALTHY LIVING

- BY MAYURI JAYASINGHE

It goes without saying that breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day. After a good night of rested sleep, especially in the case of growing children, need to start the day nutritionally equipped to face the challenging day ahead. Many overlook breakfast because of time constraints and usually breakfast tends to be something that is not nutritionally beneficial for a first meal of the day. Therefore instead of helping us start the day right, it instead, makes it more challenging for us, since you are physically lagging. Schoolgoing children have busy days indeed, from their classroom work, to physical sports and other extracurricular activities, they are always on the go and required to be fully immersed in what they are doing. Therefore getting that right meal, that right start, helps them to face these requirements head on. Eating breakfast refuels your body, enhances your mood and is the foundation for a healthy diet, still not convinced?!, well here are some facts to prove it right!

Refuels your body:

After a good night of rested sleep, breakfast is important to kick start your day. Not just any breakfast, but a healthy and nutritious one. It has to have a good balance of good fats to protein to carbohydrates, your body receives the energy needed to face the day head on.

Improves your concentration:

If children were to go to school either on an empty stomach or after eating the wrong foods, then they are asking for disaster in terms of successfully meeting their school day. Their energy levels will start to drop immediately and rather then have a positive school day, they will be struggling to pay attention in class, will suffer from low moods and even in some cases engage in bad behaviour.

A healthy weight:

When you skip meals, you tend to snack to satisfy your hunger cravings. These foods are not always healthy and this behaviour over a period of time, will contribute to weight gain. Also if you start with a healthy meal in the morning, this sets the tone for your healthy eating plans for the family as a whole. It encourages children to make wise choices and to stick to them. Healthy living and eating therefore becomes a lifestyle, rather than something to be pursued occasionally.
