SLPP denies giving nominations to Dan Priyasad, Amith Weerasinghe

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday categorically denied reports which said it had given nominations to Dan Priyasad and Mahason Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe who had been accused of inciting people against Muslims.

Suresh Priyasad alias Dan Priyasad had been in remand custody in connection with a mob attack on a group of Rohingya refugees who were seeking shelter at a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) safe house in Mount Lavinia last year and Weerasinghe who had been in remand custody over the anti-muslim riots in Kandy District in March this year was released on October 28, two days after the recent regime change.

Timing of Weerasinghe’s release on bail had been subject to various speculations and the SLPP had in one of its tweets denied one of them related to the party.

“We categorically deny reports fuelled by the UNP stating that nominations were given to Dan Priyasad and Amith Weerasinghe from the SLPP. The nomination board has not yet begun accepting applications nor have they made a final decision on the candidates,” the SLPP tweeted.

“We request the public not to be duped by false claims geared towards tarnishing Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s name and the party,” it said.
