-

The above captioned news item appeared in your issue of Nov. 21, wherein Ven.

Omalpe Sobitha Thera has said “It was a serious situation where the country’s security establishments are functioning without the knowledge of the President who is in charge of the subject of defence, and the country’s future security will be at stake”. He also states that a group of monks had come to present a memorandum seeking freedom for Ven. Galagoda Atte Gnanasara who has been convicted of a crime.

The monks should have been more decent and disciplined. Instead, they behaved in an unruly manner which the security forces at the spot had to take immediate action

The monks should have been more decent and disciplined. Instead, they behaved in an unruly manner which the security forces at the spot had to take immediate action. Hadn’t the security personnel on the spot take immediate and timely action - in whatever form, using tear gas or water cannons - the situation might have taken a serious turn.the people of this country would earnestly wish Ven. Omalpe, rest of the Buddhist prelates, Mahanayaka Theras and heads of Nikayas take action to discipline the monks, rather than criticise the security forces who were under severe stress, and also not to add fuel to the already burning fire in the country at present.
