ISLAND-WIDE PROTESTS IF NO SOLUTION TO POLITICAL CRISIS

- BY YOHAN PERERA, KRISHAN JEEWAKA JAYARUK AND ANISHA MANAGE

UNF yesterday said they will have no option but to go for countrywide protests if the political crisis is not amicably settled soon.

These sentiments were highlighted by the UNF leaders at the ‘Yukthiya Udesa’ (Rise for Justice) protest organized by the party and civil movement yesterday. The protest reached Tangalle last morning.

“We will have no option but to launch protests island-wide and to surround President Maithripala Sirisena’s official residence if the political crisis is not resolved soon,” UNP Spokesman Member of Parliament Harin Fernando said at Tangalle last morning.

“This struggle is not a struggle of the UNP but a struggle of all people of this country. This struggle is to secure a future for your children,” Mr. Fernando told the crowds at Tangalle last morning. He said a president is a temporary custodian of the nation and that he has to bow down to the will of the people.

“No one should be scared as UNF will show its majority in Parliament soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, MP Mangala Samaraweera said Gam Peraliya will be reintroduced in a UNF lead new government soon. “We will come back soon and start from where we stopped and bring prosperity to the country,” he said.

Religious observances were made at Seenigama Devala on Saturday and at Kataragama Devale last morning.
