Former President

In a statement, Mr. Rajapaksa said only the Supreme Court had the sovereign right to make final decisions and orders pertaining to the Constitution and to interpret the Constitution.
He said in order to preserve the political stability in the country, a general election should be held.
“The struggle to establish political stability in this country through the holding of a general election needs the support of the people more than ever at this moment.we request the people to commit to this programme so that their opinions can be expressed,” he said.
He also said he hoped that the people would fulfil their duty to the country in a peaceful and an honest manner by maintaining their love for the country, respect for the law and order and honesty towards patriotic politics.
Mr. Rajapaksa’s statement was read out by MP Dinesh Gunawardane at a news briefing last evening.
