- BY YOHAN PERERA

The UNP has moved towards ensuring balance reporting in State media and had requested the Secretary Ministry of Mass Media that reports in such media should be fair.

UNP MP Mujibur Rahman, J C Alawathuwala, ashu Marasinghe, Rohini Kaviratne, Sandeeth Samarasinghe and Hirunika Premachandra had met the Secretary Mass Media Sunil Hettiarachchi and had requested him to ensure fair reports in Sri Lanka Rupawahini Corporation, SLBC, ITN and Lakehouse.

“We originally visited SLRC looking for the Director General and we were told that he was at the Ministry of Mass Media.therefore we visited the ministry and apparently met Mr. Hettiarachchi and made our request. Then he assured to look into our request,” Mr. Rahaman told a media briefing. Meanwhile Mr. Rahman said President Maithripala Sirisena should resign from the presidency if he cannot work with the person who commands majority in the House.

“President Sirisena should appoint the person who commands majority in the House as Prime Minister the same way some of his predecessors did.“Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga had to appoint UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister in 2001 although she did not like it and did the same thing in 2004 when she appointed Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister in 2004 though she preferred to appoint Lakshman Kadirgamar to the post. Mr. Sirisena should follow the same,” he said.
