THE SCIENCE BEHIND BREAKFAST

“Don’t forget to eat breakfast!”...is a wise old saying but rather than ignore it, it would be prudent to take note. For now, it has been scientific­ally proven that breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day! The most important reason is that the first meal of the day jump starts your metabolism and sets the course for the rest of the day. When you eat breakfast you’re telling your body that there are plenty of calories to be had for the day. When you skip breakfast the message your body gets is that it needs to conserve rather than burn any incoming calories. Therefore this will lead to further weight gain, risk of obesity in both adults and children, as this behavior continues over a period of time. Here are a list of scientific­ally proved advantages as to why you should not skip breakfast. ● In the case of school going children, it improves their concentrat­ion levels and gives them the much needed boost to motivate them for the day.

● Eating a balanced breakfast helps the child eat their quote of fruit and vegetables for the day. These nutrients are essential in their growth.

● They also boost their calcium intake, which is necessary for their bone developmen­t.

● After a long night of rested sleep, children need the morning meal to boost their energy for the day. School days are long, tiring and very involved, therefore to stay on top of their game children need to have copious amounts of energy.

A benefiting breakfast should be well balanced and healthy. It should incorporat­e the right amounts of carbohydra­tes to fats to proteins. With all the fresh fruit and vegetables available on our island, it's easy for children to fill their bodies with fresh organic produce daily. Island life is indeed great for growing children..but it all start with breakfast, don’t skip it!
