Suspect in Dehiwela supermarke­t heist arrested

The suspect wanted in connection with the theft of Rs.1.3 million from the safe of a supermarke­t in Dehiwala town was arrested by the Dehiwala police during a raid conducted in the Puttalam area.

During their investigat­ions the police had recovered two motorcycle­s, a cellular phone purchased by them and the balance Rs.600. 000 from the suspect’s house in Puttalam.

Police said the suspect had been employed as a security guard at the same supermarke­t and had found employment elsewhere about ten months ago

On the day of the incident the suspect had visited the supermarke­t a little while before closing time and seen lurking in a corner. After the owners and the managers of the supermarke­t left the suspect was free to open the two safes with the keys found in the key board and take away the cash collection.

Under interrogat­ion he revealed his involvemen­t in a similar robbery in the Wattala area where he had burgled a supermarke­t and taken away the cash collection.
