Sunshine Games 2019

Annual Sports And Fun Day For Differently Abled Children

-

The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan has initiated and conducted a Sports Day for differently abled children since 1998. This event has become a part of the calendar for the children, who look forward to this one-of-a-kind event.

We call this flagship project “The Sunshine Games” as it brightens up the mind and souls of about 1,000 differently-abled children between the ages of 8 to 18, from 30-35 schools across the Island. And it really brings smiles to their faces! Children, who have been denied physical or mental faculties, or in some cases both faculties that we and our children take for granted enjoy games and entertainment. skills and talent whilst enjoying the events is a very heart-rending and a fulfilling experience. We strive to make it a fun day by organising various other activities, in addition to the track and field events. All the participants and support staff are provided with event T shirts, Base Ball Caps, breakfast, lunch, Bottled Water, ice cream and other nutritional refreshments and Tea. We also create a semi carnival atmosphere by bringing in a merry-go-round, mini train, bouncers, face painters, balloon vendors and a papare band for their entertainment. All this is given to the children and the adults who accompany them free of charge. Their transportation costs are also covered.

There are approximately 200 events throughout the day. The games are conducted on a professional platform to international guidelines for such a competition, under the supervision of the “Athletic Association of Sri Lanka”. Winners are awarded medals and certificates in a podium finish to the sounds of the bugle.
