Nine receive death penalty for murder

The death penalty was imposed on nine convicts by High Court Judge Ms. Yvonne Fernando last Friday (8) in connection with the murder of a person by torturing.

Attorney General has filed indictment­s against the accused with regard to the murder of Maha Lekamge Lionel Fernando, aged 27 and a resident of Marawila - Mudukatuwa by torturing using clubs and swords in an unlawful assembly on or around June 24, 2001.

High Court judge imposed the death penalty on them due to the charges against the accused being proved by the prosecutio­n.

There are brothers of the same family who were imposed the capital punishment.

This is the first time the capital punishment was imposed for a number of people in one day by Chilaw High Court.

The death penalty has been imposed by Chilaw High Court on Waranakula­suriya Nimal Ajith Fernando and Warnakulas­uriya Jerad Sugath Fernando residents of Kurusa Palliya Road, Marawila, Poruthotag­e Patrick Osmand Fernando of Harold Herath Mawatha, Marawila, Warnakulas­uriya Ajith Antony Peiris of Harold Herath Mawatha, Marawila, Joseph Anthony Wijendra Fernando, Aluthgamag­e Donald Samantha Fernando, Aluthgama Lekamge Osmand Ranil Peiris, Molligoda Liyanage Chaminda Dixon Thusara and Illippuge Sarath Prasanna Fernando all residents of Mudukatuwa.
