Aladdin’s Genie revealed!
Disney revealed the second trailer for their highly-anticipated Aladdin, offering the first true glimpse at Will Smith’s Genie, and fans are not pleased. While Disney unveiled the first photos of Will Smith’s
Genie back in December, the trailer reveals the first look of the Genie’s all-blue look, directly after coming out of the lamp. The trailer (courtesy of Walt Disney Studios Youtube) first aired during the 61st Grammy Awards on CBS Sunday night. The trailer opens with a glimpse of Jafar’s red parrot Iago flying high above the desert, along with a new glimpse of Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) himself. While at the mouth of the Cave of Wonders, Jafar asks Aladdin to ‘bring me the lamp,’ as we see Aladdin (Mena Massoud) with his pet monkey Abu, as the cave lights up.
Your life begins now, Aladdin,’ Jafar adds, before Aladdin walks into the cave. The trailer shows a colourful parade in the streets along with another glimpse of Princess Jasmine (Naomi
Scott) and a thrilling shot of Aladdin in the Cave of Wonders, which is crumbling around him before revealing the title card.
The trailer ends with the shot many fans were waiting for, when Aladdin rubs the lamp and a blue cloud comes out of the lamp, which ultimately forms into the genie.
The fully formed Genie starts approaching Aladdin, confused that he doesn’t know who he is.
You really don’t know who I am? Genie? Wishes? Lamp? None of that ringing a bell?’ Smith’s Genie says, while offering the first real look at the Genie.
Like the original animated movie, this Genie is all blue, with a shaved head, save for a ponytail atop his head, along with a goatee.
He also has a lot of gold jewellery on, including an ornate gold necklace and thick gold bracelets. Immediately after the trailer debuted, fans started taking to Twitter, dragging Smith’s look, comparing him to the blue creatures in Avatar and even Tobias Bluth’s
(David Cross) Blue Man Group shots from Arrested Development. Entertainment
Weekly writer Dana Schwartz tweeted, ‘Remember when live-action Aladdin was on the cover of EW and you all got mad because Will Smith wasn’t blue? Well who’s the dumb one now.’ Digital artist Bosslogic also responded to criticisms of his early artwork where he gave Smith a ‘huge neck,’ stating, ‘Remember that time I gave him a huge neck and y’all laughed at me. I just want to hear the voice!’
Bloody-disgusting founder Brad Miska said, ‘Oh my gooooodddddddddd #Aladdin,’ and included a shot of Sam Worthington’s blueskinned avatar in Avatar.
