Over 5,000 teams expected for DSI Super Sport VB tournament

Entries for the 19th DSI Super Sport Schools Volleyball Championsh­ips will be available from February 28 at respective schools and all DSI showrooms across the island.

Completed applicatio­ns should be submitted to the nearest DSI Showroom while they can also be posted to the Marketing Department at 2S7, High Level Road, Navinna, Maharagama.

Applicatio­ns must be submitted by March 29.

The tournament is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and the Schools Volleyball Associatio­n.

The tournament will be conducted in two stages namely, District Level and National Level under five age groups: Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under17 and Under-19 (Girls and Boys).

The Under-11 Boys/girls category was added for the first time last year.

The tournament will be held at both, district and national levels and will be held as follows:

■ District Level: April 27 - May 5 ■ National Level: July 1 – 7 ■ Finals – July 27- 28

The final matches will be held at the National Youth Service Council (NYSC) courts, Maharagama.

Initiated by DSI in 1999 along with the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and the Ministry of Education, the purpose of the championsh­ip is to provide an opportunit­y as well as necessary support to rural and urban volleyball players as well as a platform of national standard for them to show off their skills and further build their careers in both the national and internatio­nal arena. The initiation of the schools’ volleyball championsh­ip has contribute­d in the developmen­t of nearly 40 sports personalit­ies.

It is a significan­t occasion for us at DSI, as 2019 marks the 19th year of the DSI Super Sport Schools Volleyball Championsh­ip.

At the point of initiation, a total of 198 teams participat­ed in the championsh­ip. This year the organisers expect the participat­ion of over 5,000 teams from across the island.

A press conference took place at the Olympic House chaired by Ranjith Siyambalap­itiya (MP), President, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and Thusitha Rajapaksa, Managing Director, D.Samson and Sons Pvt. Ltd.

“It is a significan­t occasion for us at DSI, as 2019 marks the 19th year of the DSI Super Sport Schools Volleyball Championsh­ip. It is both a pleasure and privilege for DSI to sponsor this muchantici­pated annual event, which serves as a platform of recognitio­n for talented young sportsman/women from schools all across the island.

It is also our hope that the DSI Super Sport Schools Volleyball Championsh­ip will play a crucial role in developing and popularisi­ng Volleyball as the national sport of our country,” Rajapaksa said.
