What’s trending this wedding season

- Thishana M. Rajanayake

A wedding is a memory. With all colours and glamour everywhere, this is the best day to get all creative and to differ from conventional wedding ideas. 2018 was full of new wedding trends starting from fashion, design and going all the way to the interiors. With a little twist of your own, you can make these trends all yours and make your dream day all existing and precious.

TRANSPARENCY

This is one of the best ideas so far because there is a lot you can do with this. Weddings went wild with this concept and had loads of transparent details: decor and stationery made of perspex or acrylic, glass marquees and clear tents, ghost chairs, glass vases, velum invitations and much more. 2018 weddings were mostly about texture, therefore, going transparent seemed to be a pleasant contrast to the mix and also was a perfect complement to the elegant modern minimalism.

UNICORN WEDDINGS

Even though it might seem extreme, this concept does not really suggest going all crazy with the idea. But during the last few years using the explosion of unicorn/mermaid iridescence seems to have finally hit the industry and this year maybe we will see holographic and iridescent touches all over the place.

VELVET

After invading the fashion world, now it is making a noticeable impact on the wedding world. Because texture seems to take the centre of attention velvet adds that gorgeous, luxe feel, whether it’s through table linens, bouquet ribbons, bridesmaid dresses, grooms’ blazers, or plush furnishings. This is a promising feature in many weddings yet to happen and creative uses of this material are coming through in 2019.

DARK AND MOODY

This was a trendsetting started by South African brides embracing their ‘dark’ side. These brides go with moody jewel-toned hues and wintery palettes over pastels and traditional white. Along with this trend began the trend of dark and moody photography and last year it all came together into an explosion of rich, heavy detailing and Baroque, slightly Gothic opulence. Love it or hate it, this is good news if you are planning to fill your wedding venue with flowers because now all those aubergines, maroons, and burgundy colours can bloom at your wedding. You need not to go fullscale dark and moody but can always consider adding one or two details for bridesmaid dresses, linens and cake.

STATEMENT BRIDAL ACCESSORIES

This concept has also been popping up for a few of seasons on the bridal runaways but this was the year it took the bridal fashion by storm. What many brides like about this trend is that they can give the beautiful shape and ethereal quality you get from a long veil, but in a less formal way, and they also provide a touch of warmth. This trend is also a kind of fun because adding a cape to the dress gives a superhero vibe to the bride. But it does not have to be a cape. It can either be cool leather or a denim jacket, a hat, statement headpieces, or a cool piece of jewellery.

CIRCULAR ARCHES

This is a trend the couples fell in love with all over again a few years ago and now the trend has made its return looking prettier than before. A circle arch is a fabulous way to decorate your ceremony, and it also ties in with wreaths in wedding decor and bouquets. For those who are new to this concept: it is also beautifully symbolic, with a circle representing eternal love.

NEON LIGHTS

This is ideal for couples looking for a rock ‘n’ roll twist for their big day. You can always go for greenery shows because it no signs of disappearing, but it’s moving from tables to walls, and tropical greenery installations have become the trend of this year with a statement neon sign, which stands out beautifully against the greenery.

DRIED BOTANICALS

Even though it is the fresh flowers taking the centre stage in weddings a fusion of the boho, desert and botanical trends have given rise to something new. If you are going with the concept, you have the privilege of using dried floral including wheat, foliage, and various other grasses. This gives a dramatic nature to the event. You can use this to add texture to living bouquets and centrepieces or keep table decor simple, sweet and homelyvintage.
