The CID yesterday said that 13 police officers and 20 prison officers are under the spotlight as investigations are progressing to ascertain the roles they had played and various dealings they have had with underworld leaders including Makandure Madush and other gang members.

CID sources said among them were high ranking police and prison officers.

A senior police officer said following confidential reports about these officers who have had dealings with the underworld, arrangements have been made to listen to telephone conversations between the officers and underworld leaders.

When inquired IGP Pujith Jayasundera said if any police officer found to have connections with the underworld would be punished according to the law of the country and provisions of the establishment code.

Replying to journalists he said they had not yet received any information about two police officers who had attended Madush’s party in Dubai.

Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando said they had received information about prison officers helping underworld members in prison in various ways and these officers are also believed to have damaged the jamer equipment installed in prisons to obstruct telephone conversations.

There were reports that two prison officers were among those who attended the birthday party in Dubai.
