The Commons Coffee House, one of Colombo’s most popular hangout spots, has opened a new branch at the Hatch building in Fort. Its location in the thick of the hustle and bustle of Colombo’s central business district makes it the perfect spot to unwind with some comfort food or grab a quick lunch in the middle of a busy workday and head out the door. As of now, it is open on Monday through Saturday from 8.00 am to 7.00 pm.

Ambience

The interior is very “hipster chic”, with its barstool table, comfy couches, and mini window seats and is dowsed in natural light- a welcome feature. The space is very chilled out, insulating those within from the hurry-scurry of the outside world.

Drinks

Being a sceptic of anything that asseverates itself as “spicy chocolate”, the Mexican

Chocolate milkshake happened to be a pleasant surprise. It was a perfect blend of spices and chocolate, and we highly recommend it to anyone adventurous enough to try this combo. We were told that the blend was made in-house.

We take our coffee very seriously. In that light, and upon trying out their Caffe Latte, we can safely say that the coffee they serve up is pretty great.

The Food

A special feature of this branch, and one that will most definitely be appreciated by “nocturnals” with a strange sense of entitlement to 24/7 access to breakfast, is their all- day breakfast menu. We tried the Herbal Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon and Tzatziki Cream and enjoyed it thoroughly. 10/10 would recommend.

Out of their selection of salads, we gave the Crunchy Greens, Watermelon and Feta a go. It was fresh and tasty. What’s really great about the salad is that it is a meal on its own and those looking to walk on the healthier side of life would definitely appreciate their selection of salads.

The Pasta Alfredo (from the pasta section of the menu) was a none too fussy pasta dish- was delectable and not too heavy.

From the sandwiches, we tried the Roasted Beef and

Avocado Sandwich. The overall flavour was good but the taste of the guacamole didn’t come through as much as we would have liked it to, and comparing the bread to filling ratio, a little more filling would have made this sandwich great.

Dessert

The Passion Fruit Cheesecake was the perfect combination of tangy and sweet. It was creamy but not too heavy.

Service

Overall, the service was good. The staff was very attentive, obliging and friendly.

Overall

Would definitely go again. It’s a great place to sit around, have a chat and unwind over delicious comfort food. The food isn’t unfairly priced and is worth what you are paying for. What’s great about the place is that there is something on the menu for everyone including those looking for a wholesome, healthy meal. At this point, we’d also like to mention that they use paper straws in their drinks and try to be as environmentally friendly as possible and keep their usage of plastic to a minimum.
